Start with customer questions, not colours
A business feed should explain what you offer, whom it suits and how to take the next step. An attractive grid cannot replace that information and does not guarantee reach or sales. This plan is an editorial recommendation for a small business, not a universal Instagram algorithm formula.
Before designing, write down three questions customers ask before ordering. For example: how large the item is, what it looks like in use and how to check availability. Give each planned post one main answer. Do not squeeze the whole catalogue and every ordering condition onto a cover.
Give photographs specific jobs
Prepare an overall view, a detail, a sense of scale and an example of the product in use. A sharp, well-lit photograph is more useful than a filter that hides texture. Compare colours with the actual item; for services, show real processes and people only with their permission.
Alternate busy and quieter compositions to make browsing comfortable, without following a rigid checkerboard pattern. When understanding one product requires several angles, group them into a carousel. Each individual post should make sense without neighbouring images.
A sample six-post plan
This is a hypothetical bag workshop example, not a Leadgen case study or a promise of results. Six posts do not imply a required weekly frequency: publish when the material and answers are ready.
| Purpose | What to show | What the caption explains |
|---|---|---|
| Introduction | The whole bag | Its intended use |
| Details | Seams, fastening and lining | Materials and care without unsupported claims |
| Scale | The bag beside a familiar object | Exact dimensions |
| Use | Items inside the bag | What fits and what does not |
| Choice | Available options together | How the models differ |
| Next step | A readable information card | How to check stock and order |
Make the style readable as well as recognisable
Choose a small set of colours and typefaces and a consistent heading approach. Avoid placing essential text over a busy part of a photograph. WCAG offers a useful reference for text-card readability: a contrast ratio of at least 4.5:1 for ordinary text. This is a web-accessibility reference, not an Instagram ranking requirement.
Repeat essential conditions as plain text in the caption rather than leaving them only in the image. Prepare a brief description of the meaning of informative images; the W3C approach to text alternatives helps identify what matters. Do not turn that description into a list of keywords.
Check the layout at its real viewing size
Open the prepared cover on a phone without zooming in. If the title takes effort to read, shorten it and increase the font size. Check the available post and profile previews: important details should not sit near a cropped edge.
Do not build a template around unverified universal grid dimensions. Display depends on the format and interface; check the actual material you are uploading before publication. Do not delete useful older posts just to improve the colour arrangement.
- The product or service is clear.
- The heading is readable without zooming.
- The photograph does not distort important properties.
- Any prices and conditions are current.
- There is one clear next action.
Evaluate content and enquiries separately
After publication, record which questions customers still have and which posts help answer them. Saves, visits, enquiries and orders are different events; do not describe a view or click as a sale. When comparing content, account for the topic, format, period and paid promotion.
Start with one change: show product scale more clearly or simplify a cover. Keep a short change–expectation–observation log. Without enough observations, the result remains a hypothesis rather than proven design impact.
What to prepare next
Use the separate product-photography plan for your shoot and the brand visual-kit article for colours and typefaces. This guide focuses on post roles and feed checks, not a complete branding project or ad setup.
Once the profile explains the product and enquiry path, you can discuss Instagram and Facebook advertising. Leadgen can help examine the advertising task; tidy design does not replace reviewing the offer, budget and enquiry handling.
